Westside.fm is a free urban community radio station transmitting from an undisclosed district simply known as “the Westside.” Our broadcast pays tribute to a tradition of quiet defiance: the engineers and radio enthusiasts of the late communist era who, with limited tools and remarkable ingenuity, found ways to let almost forbidden signals slip past the authorities.
One enduring story tells of a lone technician (let's call him Mr. Ludwinski) working beneath the surface, hidden in a submarine, who managed to send a brief, unfiltered message into the night. It lasted only minutes, yet it travelled far — a small act of technical courage that resonated well beyond its intended range. That same spirit of subtle rebellion inspires our work today.
For many who grew up far from its borders, “the West” was never simply a geographical direction — it was a carefully curated idea. An almost cinematic world built from glossy advertisements and whispered stories: a place where people wore Levi’s and Wrangler jeans as if they were badges of independence, where Coca‑Cola tasted like possibility, and where the glow of a KFC bucket seemed to promise a life of uncomplicated abundance.
It was the place of fast cars, endless consumer choice and a certain carefree approach to romantic relationship(s). A land of milk and honey, as some might say, though usually with a knowing smile.
But behind every illusion lies a price. For many, the journey West meant leaving everything familiar behind — stepping into a world that offered opportunity, yes, but also demanded courage, reinvention and the willingness to start again from nothing.
It is this mixture of aspiration, sacrifice and quiet determination that shaped the spirit of the Westside. A place where people arrived hoping to make things happen, free from surveillance, restriction or the subtle pressures of conformity. A place where one could finally breathe, create, and broadcast without fear.
And so, from this imagined frontier — part reality, part dream — Westside.fm sends its signal to keep rebellion alive. Which rebellion? Sometimes we fight that very illusion that brought you to the Westside in first place. We rebel against the gray fog of conformity, against the surveillance algorithms that predict us, and against any propagandist boundary set to keep the human spirit quiet. So we proudly present our freedom of choice. The freedom of expression through a small, steady voice of freedom carried by the airwaves. Welcome to the Westside.

A level of compliance we frankly neither expect nor encourage from our listeners. We call her Bethany. Whether she represents the legendary "land of milk and honey" or just the unbothered stance of someone who refuses to be rushed, she’s become an essential part of our crew. If you manage to pause for a moment, tune in, and cut through the digital fog — you’re already ahead of the game and ready for the next bull run. Either way, Bethany is here to stay. She is our symbol of confidence, strength, prosperity and forward motion, just like our radio initiative.
